Having some kind of goal is important, this also applies for meditation. As always the goals can be very different per person and mainly depends on the reason for meditating. Of course some people just starting with meditation out of curiosity but i would argue that most of these people having other reasons, too. It might be just the wish to decelerate the pace of live, to be more mindful or even to search if there is more in life. Taking all that it makes sense to take a step back and think about what it is that’s lead you to the conclusion to try meditation in the first place.

Meditation might be a hobby for you but it can also be a journey which can make you become a better version of yourself, so it can be important to have some kind of long-term motivation to get the most out of meditation. Of course you can have the urge to just relax and use meditation as your tool for it, that’s totally fine, there is no right or wrong. But maybe meditation can do more for you. Maybe it can give you a new perspective of certain things. Perhaps there is something you think about only from time to time. For example, you might think about stuff before you sleep and don’t care about it in your daily life, because those thoughts don’t have enough room to explore them deeper. In this case the goal could be to eliminate unnecessary distractions in your daily life to give unexplored thoughts room to grow.

In the end you should have a goal which aligns with your life to have a more meaningful experience while meditating.
